From the base of the Madrid mountain range to the countryside of the Tagus depression, following the course of the Guadarrama and Aulencia rivers, it has three main landscapes in its territory: Mediterranean forest, riverside forest and crops or wastelands. ![]() In the western part of the Community of Madrid we find this natural area of great environmental diversity. It is an extensive body of water of 650 hectares spread longitudinally through the port of San Juan, in the extreme southwest of the Community of Madrid, very close to the province of Ávila. The San Juan Reservoir is the most popular water park in the Madrid Region. Buitrago stands out for the preservation of its old walled enclosure and its town centre has been declared a site of cultural interest. ![]() The municipality, which has a population of 1940 inhabitants (INE 2021), is named after the river Lozoya, which surrounds the town. Buitrago del Lozoya is a Spanish municipality and town in the north of the Community of Madrid, located at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range. It is a place of great scenic beauty with countless possible routes. The Lozoya valley is bounded by a series of mountain ranges, all belonging to the Sistema Central, which mark its natural limits. It is located in a clearing in a Scots pine forest. It is irrigated by the Pinilla stream, a tributary of the Lozoya river and releases its water from a height of 30 metres, in a very rocky area. It is within the municipal district of Navarredonda and San Mamés, in the Lozoya Valley. This waterfall is located in the northern part of the southeastern slope of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park. Here you can see how the water from the springs on the summits of the mountains eventually resurges between the gigantic rocks, forming the waterfall. The highest waterfall in the Madrid Region is only one hour and twenty minutes from the capital. In the town of Somosierra is La Chorrera de los Litueros. Its play between the rocks makes the place beautiful and unique. La Chorrera del Hornillo: a waterfall that stretches up to 10 metres on the outskirts of Madrid. It is a place not to be missed in the Sierra Norte thanks to its rural spirit, which remains intact in each of its picturesque cobbled streets and in its stone, slate, wood, adobe and Arabic tile buildings. It is a small, quiet place, full of history, with a well-kept appearance and great architectural beauty that has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest. Patones de Arriba is ideal for a getaway from Madrid and to enjoy routes through the historic centre and its natural surroundings. To the northeast of the Madrid Region lies the Sierra del Rincón mountain range, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2005, an area characterised by its varied landscape and rich biodiversity. For better or worse, it is part of Spanish history. Its grandiloquent beauty, surrounded by nature and breathtaking views of the surroundings, hides a dark and violent past. The Valley of the Fallen is one of the most controversial Spanish monuments. Monasterio de San Lorenzo in El Escorial, is a silent, majestic place, where they wanted to reflect all the power and grandeur, of the past Spanish empire.
